Before you jump straight in and order the tiles you like the look of the most, we have a few things to bear in mind.
The tiles you choose for your floor are just as important as the paint you choose for the walls and the furniture you choose for the lounge. In fact, they are probably even more important as they aren’t so easy to replace if you change your mind!
It can be hard knowing where to start when it comes to tiles, so here are a few tips…
1. Function First
The tiles must meet the need of the room, it is function over all else when it comes to floor coverings.
Take the bathroom for example, this room faces a huge amount of water and so it is really important to choose water-resistant/non-porous tiles, to ensure you’ll get some longevity out of them, maybe a marble tile. On the other hand, the kitchen faces a lot of foot traffic and you want something low maintenance that you won’t need to wipe clean every 5 minutes, like limestone tiles.
2. Size (and shape) Matter
Just like the colour, pattern and finish do, the size of the tile can also impact the general appearance of the space. You might want large marble tiles that blend into one, or you might want to make a statement with smaller herringbone tiles and contrasting grout.
3. Colour
The colour of the floor plays a big role in the look and feel of your home. Some colours work well in one room but not in another, so it is always a good idea to bring some samples home to see how they work in your space over the course of the day.
4. Finish
The finish of the tiles also makes a big impact on the space. Matte tiles like stone are great for outdoors, whilst glossy tiles are often preferred inside. For bathrooms, we often advise people to use wood-effect tiles, as they are very slip resistant.
